VSCO Launches Video Recording Feature for iPhone Users
VSCO, the popular imaging platform, has introduced video recording capabilities in its Capture app for the iPhone. This feature, which was launched in June 2025, allows users to shoot videos with the same presets they have come to love for photography. Alongside this addition, the app has also rolled out a new film grain filter that aims to replicate the aesthetic of traditional analog film.
The new video recording function does come with limitations. It does not provide the same range of effects options or manual controls available for still images, and the video resolution is capped at 1080p. Despite these constraints, VSCO believes that the integration of its extensive library of over 50 photo presets into video recording will open new avenues for creativity. According to the company, “We’re excited to see how creators will capture their creative point of view by applying the presets to motion in real-time.”
Enhancing the User Experience
The film grain filter, developed in-house, enhances the video experience by allowing users to adjust the grain’s strength, size, and color. This flexibility means the effect can range from subtle to striking, effectively complementing the various Film X preset filters inspired by real-world film stocks and photography eras. Users who are members of VSCO can combine this grain effect with more than 40 different filters, enhancing the creative possibilities available to them.
The Capture app represents a significant milestone for VSCO, marking its return to mobile photography. The app provides a diverse range of presets, filters, and manual controls designed to help users influence the look of their images. Although a previous version of the app existed, it eventually shifted focus towards the company’s social media ambitions. The new standalone app is VSCO’s first dedicated mobile photography offering in over a decade, positioning it to compete with a variety of other camera applications available on the iPhone.
Membership and Pricing
To access the full suite of features within the app, users must establish at least a free VSCO account. Certain functionalities, including advanced filters and effects, are reserved for premium members. Paid memberships start at just $2.50 per month, providing an affordable option for users seeking enhanced photographic tools.
As the market for mobile photography applications continues to evolve, VSCO will need to implement regular updates to maintain competitiveness. The introduction of video recording is a step towards reinvigorating interest in the app, and it remains to be seen how users will embrace this new functionality in their creative pursuits.
