VSCO Introduces Video Capabilities in iPhone Camera App
VSCO has announced the addition of video recording capabilities to its iPhone camera app, Capture, as of June 2025. This update brings a significant enhancement for users, enabling them to shoot video while utilizing the app’s extensive library of over 50 photo presets. Alongside this feature, VSCO has introduced a new film grain filter designed to emulate the aesthetic of traditional analog film.
While the new video recording option offers users the chance to apply beloved presets to their motion content, it does come with limitations. Notably, the resolution for video is capped at 1080p, and users will not have access to the same range of effects and manual controls available for still image capture. VSCO has expressed enthusiasm about how creators will leverage these presets in real-time video, stating, “We’re excited to see how creators will capture their creative point of view by applying the presets to motion in real-time.”
New Film Grain Filter Enhances Video Experience
The recently developed film grain effect is intended to complement the existing film-inspired filters within the app. Users can adjust the grain filter’s strength, size, and color, allowing for a customized experience that ranges from subtle to dramatic. This feature works in conjunction with over 40 different Film X presets, which are inspired by various real-world film stocks and eras in photography.
The launch of VSCO Capture marks a notable return for the company to the mobile photography space, having previously shifted focus towards social media. With this app, VSCO aims to recapture the essence of its earlier offerings, providing a standalone mobile application for the first time in over a decade.
Membership Options and Competitive Landscape
To use the app, users must have at least a free VSCO account. Some features, including certain advanced filters, are exclusive to premium members, with subscriptions starting at $2.50 per month. As VSCO Capture enters a crowded market of iPhone camera applications, it will need to provide regular updates and enhancements to maintain competitiveness.
The introduction of video recording and the film grain filter reflects VSCO’s commitment to evolving its platform and meeting the needs of its user base. With the potential for creative expression through both photography and videography, VSCO continues to position itself as a relevant player in the ever-changing landscape of mobile photography.
