This method allows drummers to play with headphones, significantly reducing noise levels, which is particularly beneficial for those living in shared spaces.

Creating an electronic drum set from an existing acoustic kit is more straightforward than it might seem. The process involves dampening the drums and cymbals, followed by fitting each component with piezo sensors. These small discs capture vibrations and convert them into electrical signals, which can trigger an electronic drum module.

PocketBoy began this project using a PDP New Yorker kit, outfitting it with mesh heads to minimize sound from the snares and toms. Low-volume cymbals, sourced from Amazon, complemented the setup. Each drum was equipped with a piezo element, which was connected to a 6.5mm jack to facilitate easy connection. The sensors were mounted on foam squares inside the drums, secured with a simple bracket system made from hardware store materials.

The signals from the piezo elements are captured by a DDrum DDti interface. This device transmits commands to an attached PC, where Ableton 12 Lite plays the corresponding drum sounds in real time. Although PocketBoy describes the setup as “quick and dirty,” it is ideal for quiet practice sessions. In a live performance context, traditional acoustic kits would likely be a better choice, but the conversion does not hinder the ability to play acoustically.
