Toyota Issues Recall Due to Incorrect Taillights in bZ4X Models
A recent recall by Toyota affects several bZ4X vehicles in the United States due to a significant parts listing error. The company is inspecting vehicles after it was discovered that taillights intended for the South Korean market were mistakenly distributed for use in American models. This confusion arises from the differing automotive lighting regulations between the two countries.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that certain taillights designed for South Korea lack the necessary side marker lamp required by U.S. standards. Instead, these lights include a side marker reflector, which does not comply with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. The issue came to light when a request for a Korean-spec taillight assembly was made from Canada in October 2023, prompting Toyota to investigate further.
Toyota’s findings revealed that both U.S. and Korean versions of the replacement taillights were listed in the company catalog. Unfortunately, the Korean version was also marked with “USA,” leading to confusion among customers purchasing replacement parts. Roughly 79 taillight assemblies that were intended for the South Korean market may have been sent to the U.S., but the automaker has not specified how many have been installed on customer vehicles.
The recall process will involve notifying owners of affected bZ4X models by mail. Toyota dealers will conduct inspections to determine whether the appropriate U.S.-spec lights were installed. Should any Korean-spec units be identified, Toyota will replace them at no cost to the owners.
While Toyota has a reputation for quality control, this incident underscores that even leading brands can encounter operational errors. The automaker is committed to rectifying the situation promptly to ensure compliance with safety regulations and maintain customer trust.
