Tour Down Under Adjusts Stage 4 as Fire Danger Rises
The Santos Tour Down Under has announced significant changes to the fourth stage of the race due to an Extreme fire danger rating for the region. Forecast maximum temperatures are expected to reach 43°C. As a result, the iconic Willunga Hill climb has been removed from the stage, which will now cover 131km instead of the originally planned 176km.
The modified stage will commence from Brighton at 10:10 AM, an hour earlier than initially scheduled. It will maintain the route towards Willunga township but will no longer include the challenging ascents of Willunga Hill, a long-standing feature of the race.
In a statement, race director Stuart O’Grady emphasized the importance of safety for both riders and spectators. “While the removal of the famous Willunga Hill climb is disappointing news for cycling fans, ultimately rider and spectator safety is always the number one priority for our event,” he said. O’Grady noted that this decision was made following consultations with emergency services and the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI).
Originally, stage 4 was anticipated to be one of the most demanding segments of the six-day event, especially following an intense stage 2 that featured the dual Corkscrew climbs. During that stage, riders from UAE Team Emirates-XRG, including former race winners Jay Vine and Jhonatan Narváez, established a lead of approximately one minute over their closest competitors.
As the race progresses, organizers remain focused on ensuring a thrilling yet safe experience for all participants and fans. Further updates regarding the event will be provided as the situation develops.
