The Stanford Daily has officially commenced its 269th volume, welcoming a new editorial team led by Editor-in-Chief George Porteous and Executive Editors Amina Wase and Anna Yang. The trio expressed their commitment to upholding the publication’s legacy while navigating the evolving landscape of journalism and technology.

In a letter addressed to the readership, Porteous, Wase, and Yang highlighted their gratitude to the outgoing leadership of Greta Reich, Lauren Koong, and Ananya Udaygiri, who dedicated the past year to enhancing the paper and fostering community engagement. The new editors aim to build on this foundation by focusing on key initiatives.

Commitment to Investigative Journalism

The editors emphasized a desire to pursue ambitious investigations and reported features that reflect the unique experiences and stories within the Stanford and Bay Area communities. They aim to report fearlessly and accurately, leveraging their position as students at a prestigious institution. “Your tips are welcome here,” they stated, inviting the community to contribute.

Another significant focus will be on adapting to technological advancements. The Stanford Daily has a history of innovation, having transitioned to an online platform as early as 1995. This year, the editorial team plans to develop ethical and transparent guidelines regarding the use of artificial intelligence tools in their newsroom. Recognizing the increasing reliance on social media for news consumption, they will also enhance the publication’s digital strategy, including the production of vertical videos to showcase staff and their work.

Legal Challenges and Community Advocacy

The Stanford Daily is currently involved in a lawsuit against the federal government, represented by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE). The lawsuit is aimed at safeguarding the publication’s ability to feature the perspectives of international students. The editors contend that the enforcement of immigration laws has created an environment of fear among international students regarding deportation and visa issues, which in turn hampers their participation in journalism. They view this legal action as a necessary step to uphold the principles of democratic reporting.

In addition to these initiatives, the editorial team intends to foster educational opportunities for staff and engage new contributors through an upcoming recruitment effort. Each member of the incoming masthead brings diverse talents and innovative ideas, reinforcing the publication’s commitment to relevant journalism.

Porteous, a junior from New York studying history, has previously served as News Managing Editor and has reported on issues related to university governance. Wase, a senior from Dayton, Ohio, has experience across various editorial roles and is studying international relations and South Asian studies. Yang, a junior from San Jose, California, specializing in electrical engineering and computer science, has also held multiple editorial positions, focusing on Title IX reporting.

As they embark on this new chapter, the editorial team looks forward to engaging with the Stanford community and reporting on the stories that matter most.
