Rivian Unveils Major Software Update 2025.46 with Key Features
Rivian has announced the rollout of its latest over-the-air software update, designated as 2025.46, which introduces significant enhancements to its electric vehicles. This update includes the highly anticipated Universal Hands-Free driving feature, alongside a new digital key functionality for owners of the Gen 2 R1 models. The features were first previewed during Rivian’s AI and Autonomy event held in Palo Alto last week.
The software update incorporates a range of new functionalities, building on the advancements discussed at the event. Among the highlights is the Universal Hands-Free driving capability, which significantly broadens the range of roads where R1 owners can utilize the driving assist feature. With this update, Gen 2 drivers can engage in hands-free driving on virtually any road with clearly marked lane lines. However, it is important to note that this feature does not yet provide full autonomy, as it cannot manage stops at traffic lights or stop signs.
During the event, Rivian’s founder and CEO, RJ Scaringe, unveiled the company’s new in-house designed silicon chip, which will support the forthcoming dedicated autonomy platform. This effort includes plans to integrate LiDAR technology into the upcoming R2 models, further enhancing the company’s advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). The company also announced plans to expand the coverage of its Enhanced Highway Assist feature, extending its availability from 135,000 miles to over 3.5 million miles of roads across the United States and Canada, with this rollout expected to commence in early 2026.
In addition to Universal Hands-Free driving, the 2025.46 update introduces a new digital key feature, allowing Gen 2 R1 owners to add their R1S or R1T keys to digital wallets on devices such as iPhones, Apple Watches, Google Pixel, or Samsung smartphones. This feature not only simplifies access to the vehicle but also enables owners to share access with family and friends easily.
Rivian has also revamped the Driver Display interface for both Gen 1 and Gen 2 R1 owners, enhancing the user experience. Additionally, the update brings exciting new features for R1 Quad owners, including a new tuner screen developed by the Rivian Adventure Department (RAD). This team of engineers, software developers, and designers focuses on creating and testing features that push the boundaries of Rivian’s vehicles.
The RAD Tuner, which has already been utilized in events like the Rebelle Rally and Pikes Peak, allows Gen 2 Quad owners to customize their vehicle’s behavior beyond factory presets. Drivers can adjust factors such as acceleration, torque balance, and stability using touch sliders to create savable drive modes tailored to their preferences and the terrain.
This comprehensive update signifies Rivian’s commitment to enhancing the driving experience for its users as it continues to innovate within the electric vehicle market. Enthusiasts and potential customers are encouraged to test-drive Rivian’s offerings and experience these advancements firsthand.
