RGG Studio Faces Backlash Over Yakuza 0 Delisting Decision
The gaming community is reacting strongly to RGG Studio’s recent decision to permanently delist the original PlayStation 4 version of Yakuza 0 in favor of its upcoming re-release, Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut. This change means players who wish to access the original title must now purchase the new version or find a physical copy, which has ignited significant controversy among fans of the franchise.
In an apparent attempt to address the backlash, RGG Studio has made a compromise regarding Yakuza 3 Remastered. Players will be able to purchase this remastered version from the PlayStation Store until February 12, 2024, the day the remake is set to launch. After this date, the standalone version will be removed from the store, though it will remain available as part of the Yakuza Complete Series Bundle, priced at £114.99/$129.99. This bundle includes several other games from the series, such as Yakuza Kiwami, Yakuza Kiwami 2, Yakuza 4, Yakuza 5, and Yakuza 6: The Song of Life.
The pricing structure has raised eyebrows, particularly since the standalone version of Yakuza 3 Remastered is currently available for just £15.99/$19.99. Many players are expressing frustration at being forced to pay a significantly higher price for a bundle that includes games they may not want. This pricing strategy has led some to label the move as an “unforced error” on the part of RGG Studio.
While it is commendable that SEGA is providing a way for players to enjoy the original titles, critics argue that both the remake and the remaster should be accessible independently. The community has voiced concerns that the decision could alienate long-time fans who simply wish to experience the original game without the added cost of purchasing multiple titles.
In the dynamic landscape of the gaming industry, decisions like these can significantly impact player loyalty and brand reputation. As RGG Studio prepares to launch Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut, it will need to carefully consider feedback from its community to navigate this turbulent period. The outcome of this situation may serve as a critical lesson for studios regarding the balance between remastering classic games and maintaining the accessibility of original titles.
