Port Authority Enhances Connectivity with Wi-Fi and 5G Upgrade
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has announced a significant upgrade to connectivity across its major transportation facilities. This enhancement will expand free public Wi-Fi and 5G service at key locations, including airports, PATH stations, the Midtown Bus Terminal, and the Holland and Lincoln tunnels. This initiative aims to improve the online experience for millions of daily travelers.
Under a new agreement with Boingo Wireless, the Port Authority is set to implement faster and more reliable wireless infrastructure. The partnership builds on a collaboration that has lasted over two decades, with Boingo managing the agency’s wireless networks since 1999. The expanded service is expected to provide improved connectivity not only for passengers but also for transit workers and airport staff.
Kevin O’Toole, the Chairman of the Port Authority, emphasized the importance of connectivity in modern travel. “Connectivity is as essential to travel today as runways, railroads, and roadways,” he stated. The enhancements will ensure that travelers experience secure, high-speed connectivity that meets current expectations.
Major Improvements for Travelers
The upgrades will roll out across several of the region’s busiest transit hubs, including John F. Kennedy Airport, LaGuardia Airport, Newark Liberty Airport, and Stewart Airport, along with PATH commuter stations and seaport facilities. The new neutral-host network will support 5G service for customers of major carriers such as AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon.
According to Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton, the contract aims to deliver “best-in-class free and fast Wi-Fi, impeccable cellular phone service, and superb connectivity on all fronts.” This initiative is positioned to enhance not only passenger experiences but also the efficiency of ground service operations.
The agreement will last until 2038, with an option to extend to 2043. Boingo, which manages networks at over 130 airports worldwide, is committed to ensuring that the upgrades support safer travel and a more seamless experience for all users.
With the growing reliance on digital connectivity, this initiative reflects a proactive approach to meeting the demands of modern transportation. As travelers increasingly depend on consistent online access for navigation, communication, and entertainment, the Port Authority’s enhancements signify a commitment to evolving with the needs of the public.
