OpenAI Addresses Rumors: ChatGPT Not Banned from Health, Legal Advice
OpenAI has officially countered widespread rumors suggesting that ChatGPT is banned from providing health or legal information. The confusion arose following a recent update to the company’s policy, which consolidated multiple existing documents into a single, comprehensive policy. This led to misinterpretations among users and the spread of misinformation on social media.
In response to the viral claims, Karan Singhal, OpenAI’s Head of Health AI, took to Twitter to clarify the situation. He stated, “Not true. Despite speculation, this is not a new change to our terms. Model behavior remains unchanged. ChatGPT has never been a substitute for professional advice, but it will continue to be a great resource to help people understand legal and health information.” Singhal’s remarks were triggered by a now-deleted post from betting platform Kalshi, which erroneously claimed that ChatGPT would no longer provide health or legal advice.
Policy Update Clarification
The latest update to OpenAI’s usage terms was issued on October 29, 2023, and it reiterates existing restrictions rather than implementing new ones. The policy specifies that users are prohibited from employing ChatGPT for the “provision of tailored advice that requires a license, such as legal or medical advice, without appropriate involvement by a licensed professional.” This aligns with OpenAI’s long-standing caution against activities that could “significantly impair the safety, well-being, or rights of others.”
The confusion mainly stems from OpenAI’s decision to merge three separate policy documents—covering ChatGPT usage, API guidelines, and a universal policy—into a single unified document. The company clarified that this move was intended to create a consistent set of rules across all its products and services, rather than introducing new restrictions. According to OpenAI, the consolidation simply “reflects a universal set of policies across the company’s products and services.”
Understanding ChatGPT’s Role
The clarification from OpenAI directly contradicts rumors suggesting an increased restriction on ChatGPT’s provision of health information. The company maintains that while ChatGPT can offer general explanations about legal and health topics, it is not a replacement for certified professionals.
As Singhal emphasized, the goal is to ensure that the model remains informative and secure, helping users navigate complex issues while steering clear of areas requiring licensed expertise. OpenAI has consistently advocated for treating the medical and legal information provided by ChatGPT as informational only, reinforcing the importance of consulting qualified practitioners for tailored advice.
This ongoing commitment to user safety and informed guidance affirms OpenAI’s stance in the rapidly evolving landscape of AI technology.
