Metro-North and Amtrak are set to enhance train service between New York City and Albany, responding to earlier service reductions caused by essential infrastructure work. Starting December 1, 2023, Amtrak will add one round trip to its schedule, marking a significant step towards restoring full service.

Governor Kathy Hochul made the announcement on Monday, detailing that Amtrak’s Train 235 will depart from Penn Station at 15:15 for Albany, while Train 238 will return from Albany at 12:10. This restoration comes after Amtrak canceled three weekday round trips in May due to logistical challenges stemming from the closure of one of the four tubes in the East River Tunnel.

Metro-North’s Historic Expansion

In addition to Amtrak’s updates, Metro-North Railroad will launch a new morning train from Grand Central Terminal to Albany, with a return service scheduled for the afternoon. This will be the first time Metro-North has operated service to Albany since its predecessor, the New York Central Railroad, discontinued the route in 1967.

The restoration of train service is a crucial development for commuters. Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of this service when she stated, “Restoring Amtrak service and debuting Metro-North service to Albany is a huge win for riders.” She acknowledged the challenges faced by passengers who had experienced sold-out trains and rising fares during the past five months.

Amtrak’s work on the East River Tunnel is part of a larger plan to improve infrastructure, with a complete reopening expected by the end of 2027. The restoration of services is aimed at alleviating the difficulties faced by commuters traveling between Albany and New York City during this period of construction.

As both rail companies work to enhance connectivity, the upcoming changes are anticipated to benefit a significant number of travelers, ensuring more reliable access to the state capital and beyond.
