Meta Revives Smartwatch Project with Health and AI Features
Meta has returned to development on its inaugural smartwatch, potentially set to launch later this year. This renewed focus comes alongside a new iteration of its Meta Ray-Ban Display AI glasses. According to a report from The Information, the smartwatch, codenamed Malibu 2, will incorporate health tracking capabilities and artificial intelligence features.
Earlier reports indicated that Meta had halted development on a previous smartwatch model known as Milan. In September 2022, Bloomberg detailed how the Milan prototype included a dual-camera setup, with one camera positioned below the display and another on the back. However, the second camera reportedly interfered with a sensor intended to translate nerve signals into digital commands, prompting the company to pause its efforts.
With the Malibu 2, it remains unclear whether Meta will include cameras or any form of nerve-sensing technology in the design. The tech landscape is competitive, particularly with Apple dominating the smartwatch market through its widely popular Apple Watch. Reports suggest that Apple had previously considered a smartwatch featuring a camera but shifted its focus toward enhancing AirPods and AI glasses instead.
The existing Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses, released in the United States in September 2021, utilize a neural wristband. This device translates signals generated by muscle activity into various commands, showcasing a unique integration of health technology. As Meta continues to explore similar capabilities, the effectiveness of the planned features for the Malibu 2 will be closely monitored.
The evolution of Meta’s smartwatch project reflects the broader trend in the tech industry toward combining wearables with health and AI functionalities. As companies like Meta and Apple innovate, consumers can expect increasingly sophisticated devices that not only track fitness metrics but also enhance user interaction through advanced technology.
With the potential launch of the Malibu 2 and an updated version of the Ray-Ban Display glasses, Meta aims to carve out a niche in the wearables market. The coming months will likely reveal more about how these products integrate cutting-edge technology to meet evolving consumer demands.
