Luxury Sedans Face Off: 1994’s $32K Showdown of Performance
In August 1994, a significant comparison test of luxury sedans priced around $32,000 was conducted by Car and Driver. The participating models included the BMW 325i, Chrysler LHS, Lexus ES300, Mazda Millenia S, Mercedes-Benz C220, Oldsmobile Aurora, and Volvo 850 Turbo. This test set out to explore whether a sedan priced at $32,000 offered a notable advantage over lower-priced rivals while assessing its value against more expensive options.
The benchmark of $32,000 aimed to determine if it represented a sweet spot for premium personal transport, offering a balance of practicality, performance, and comfort without excessive fuel consumption. The expectations were high for these models, each designed to provide a compelling driving experience.
The competition featured newcomers like the Oldsmobile Aurora, known for its powerful 32-valve 4.0-liter V-8 engine, and the Mazda Millenia S, which utilized a supercharged 2.3-liter V-6 engine. The Aurora boasted a robust 250 horsepower but weighed nearly two tons, raising concerns about handling. In contrast, the Millenia S weighed 556 pounds less, delivering a more dynamic performance thanks to its innovative engine design.
Key Contenders and Their Performances
The Mercedes-Benz C220 and Chrysler LHS presented sharp contrasts in design and utility. The C220, the least expensive contender, featured a 148-horsepower four-cylinder engine, which allowed it to achieve respectable fuel economy but limited its acceleration capabilities. In contrast, the Chrysler LHS stood out for its spacious interior and user-friendly controls, although its performance was deemed leisurely.
Veterans of previous tests like the Lexus ES300 and BMW 325i returned with strong reputations. The ES300, equipped with a refined 3.0-liter V-6 engine, offered a smooth ride and high levels of comfort, while the BMW 325i was celebrated for its engaging handling and sporty character.
The Volvo 850 Turbo, a fresh entrant, delivered impressive acceleration with its turbocharged 2.3-liter engine, reaching 0-60 mph in just 6.1 seconds. This performance, however, was somewhat marred by concerns over fit and finish.
Results and Conclusions
The results of this showdown revealed a clear winner: the BMW 325i. It excelled in handling and overall driving experience, solidifying its status as a leader in the segment. The 325i achieved 0-60 mph in 7.7 seconds, showcasing an impressive balance of power and agility.
Following the BMW were the Mazda Millenia S and Lexus ES300, each offering unique strengths. The Millenia S delivered exhilarating performance with its efficient supercharged engine, while the ES300 provided a luxurious and smooth ride, albeit with less excitement than its competitors.
The Oldsmobile Aurora and Chrysler LHS tied for fifth place, with the Aurora’s ambitious design falling short in performance and comfort, while the LHS provided spaciousness at the cost of agility.
This comparison not only highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of each model but also emphasized the evolving landscape of luxury sedans in the mid-1990s. The 1994 BMW 325i emerged as a benchmark, proving that premium performance can indeed coexist with affordability in the luxury sedan market.
