Lightrun Launches AI Site Reliability Engineer for Real-Time Software Solutions
Software observability startup Lightrun Inc. has introduced a groundbreaking tool designed to enhance the reliability of software systems through real-time artificial intelligence. The newly launched artificial intelligence site reliability engineer (AI SRE) enables engineering teams to dynamically create missing evidence without needing to redeploy their applications. This innovation empowers teams to identify root causes using live execution data and validate fixes directly in live environments.
As organizations increasingly adopt AI agents and coding assistants, there has been a notable shift in developer responsibilities. These tools have accelerated code generation but have also highlighted issues related to software reliability. Lightrun asserts that the advent of AI agents has transitioned developer focus from writing code to verifying and resolving issues, creating bottlenecks during runtime when software behavior can be complex and unpredictable.
Transforming Incident Response
While AI SRE tools are not entirely new, Lightrun claims that existing solutions primarily focus on post-incident workflows. They often rely on traditional telemetry data, which can lead to challenges when logs are missing or execution context is unclear. In such scenarios, teams often resort to guesswork, resulting in lengthy cycles of redeployments and manual validations.
The AI SRE from Lightrun aims to address these shortcomings by integrating live, code-level runtime context into the reliability process. Using its patented Sandbox technology, the tool interacts safely with live systems to generate new evidence, test hypotheses, and validate outcomes based on actual execution behavior. This advancement positions the AI SRE as a proactive agent in maintaining software reliability, transforming it from a reactive advisor into a trusted, autonomous engineer.
According to Chief Executive Ilan Peleg, “AI cannot resolve what it cannot see. Lightrun’s Runtime Context engine allows AI to see application behavior at a single-line level of granularity, which positions us to streamline remediation for any software issues in real time.”
Comprehensive Software Lifecycle Support
The AI SRE is built upon Lightrun’s Runtime Context engine and is designed to support reliability throughout the entire software development lifecycle. This includes proactive issue detection during development and testing, as well as autonomous investigation and remediation during live incidents. By utilizing this cutting-edge service, teams can gain a clearer understanding of how code behaves in real-time, effectively closing visibility gaps without the necessity of redeployments.
The new system also enhances root cause analysis by generating evidence directly from live environments, eliminating the need for prior instrumentation. This capability allows engineering teams to validate code changes against real runtime behavior, significantly reducing guesswork and minimizing the frequency of rollback-and-redeploy cycles.
Furthermore, Lightrun has designed the system to manage the complexities introduced by multiple AI agents operating within the software development lifecycle. This approach ensures that the tool can effectively handle unexpected challenges, which can arise during development and operational phases.
Founded with a vision to improve software reliability, Lightrun has attracted significant investment, raising a total of $115 million across four funding rounds. Notable investors include Insight Partners LP, Glilot Capital Partners LP, GTM Capital, Sorenson Capital, Accel Partners LP, and Citigroup Inc. The most recent funding rounds included $18 million in July 2024 and $70 million in April 2025.
The launch of the AI SRE marks a significant advancement in the field of software observability, positioning Lightrun as a key player in providing tools that enhance the reliability and efficiency of software systems across industries.
