Ledger CTO Urges Bitcoin Community to Prepare for Quantum Threat

While he acknowledges the threat of quantum technology, he believes it is unlikely to disrupt Bitcoin in the near term. Guillemet advocates for an upgrade to the current Bitcoin protocol to enhance its quantum resistance. This process would involve creating a “migration path” for Bitcoin, including provisions for coins that are currently presumed lost. He cautions that any migration efforts will come with trade-offs, which could impact the overall ecosystem.

Lattice-based cryptography, recognized as a leading candidate for quantum-resistant encryption, remains relatively new and has not yet been thoroughly tested. Guillemet expressed concerns, stating, “
