Honda S2000’s Unique F22C1 Engine: A North American Exclusive

The Honda S2000, a celebrated sports car, featured a unique engine variant exclusive to the North American market. Launched in 1999, the S2000 aimed to revive Honda’s legacy of performance roadsters, offering enthusiasts a compelling alternative to the more expensive NSX. The initial model, known as the AP1, was equipped with a 2.0-liter F20C engine that produced 240 horsepower and boasted a remarkable specific output of 123.5 hp per liter. Introduction of the F22C1 Engine

In 2004, Honda introduced the F22C1 engine, a larger 2.2-liter variant that replaced the original F20C for the North American market. This change came in response to feedback from U.S. drivers who desired more low-end torque for everyday driving. While the F20C’s high-revving nature was appealing, it often lacked the necessary torque for a satisfying driving experience at lower speeds.

To address these concerns, Honda increased the engine’s stroke by 6.7 millimeters, resulting in a boost to 162 lb-ft of torque, which became available at 6,500 rpm. In contrast, the F20C’s torque peaked at 153 lb-ft at a higher 7,500 rpm. Although the F22C1 maintained the same horsepower output of 240 hp, it delivered peak power earlier at 7,800 rpm, compared to 8,300 rpm for the F20C.

The new engine also featured reduced redline and fuel cutoff points, set at 8,000 rpm and 8,200 rpm respectively, which aligned more closely with the driving preferences of North American consumers. In addition to these changes, Honda reworked the valvetrain and adjusted the six-speed transmission to include lower gear ratios for enhanced acceleration.

The S2000’s combination of high-revving performance and improved low-end torque made it a standout in the sports car market. The F22C1 engine’s design not only provided a more engaging driving experience but also solidified the S2000’s reputation as a remarkable sports car during its production run, which lasted until 2009.
