Harmonic Launches AI Chatbot App to Transform Mathematical Reasoning
Harmonic, a new startup co-founded by Vlad Tenev, the CEO of Robinhood, has officially launched a beta version of its AI chatbot app on both iOS and Android platforms. The app, named Aristotle, aims to provide users with access to AI-driven solutions for complex mathematical problems. This release marks a significant step toward expanding the reach of Harmonic’s technology, which claims to deliver “hallucination-free” responses in mathematical reasoning—a notable assertion given the challenges faced by many current AI models.
The launch was announced on October 16, 2023, and comes shortly after the company secured $100 million in a Series B funding round led by Kleiner Perkins, achieving a valuation of $875 million. According to Harmonic’s CEO and co-founder, Tudor Achim, the startup is dedicated to advancing what it terms “mathematical superintelligence” (MSI). Achim stated in an interview that “within the domains that Aristotle supports, which are quantitative reasoning domains, we actually do guarantee that there’s no hallucinations.”
Harmonic’s vision is to assist users across multiple disciplines that rely heavily on mathematics, such as physics, statistics, and computer science. The chatbot is designed to produce answers using the open-source programming language Lean, which enables Aristotle to double-check the accuracy of its solutions through a rigorous algorithmic process, rather than relying solely on AI. Achim highlighted that this verification method is similar to those used in high-stakes industries such as medical devices and aviation.
The challenge of creating an AI model that can consistently deliver hallucination-free performance is substantial. Studies have shown that even top-performing AI models frequently generate incorrect or nonsensical outputs. For instance, recent reports indicate that OpenAI’s latest AI reasoning models have shown increased instances of hallucination compared to their predecessors. In contrast, Achim asserts that Aristotle has demonstrated exceptional capability by achieving gold medal performance on the 2025 International Math Olympiad through a formal testing process, which involved translating problems into a machine-readable format.
Harmonic’s plans extend beyond the app; the company intends to develop an API for enterprises wishing to integrate Aristotle’s capabilities into their operations, as well as a web application for broader consumer access. Achim expresses confidence in Harmonic’s rapid progression towards achieving its goals in MSI, suggesting that investor confidence in the startup’s ambitions justifies its current valuation.
As the demand for reliable AI tools continues to grow, especially in fields requiring precise calculations and reasoning, Harmonic’s initiative could provide a compelling solution. The startup’s commitment to addressing the reliability issues prevalent in current AI technologies positions Aristotle as a potentially transformative resource for users in various quantitative fields.
