Google Unveils Key Updates: Gemini Warnings, Foldable Features, Wear OS 6

Google has made significant announcements regarding its product lineup, including warnings about the Gemini Nano features, updates to the Pixel Watch series, and the introduction of innovative foldable technology. These developments were revealed as the highly anticipated Pixel Watch 4 officially launched, available for purchase starting at $349 for the smaller model and $399 for the 45mm variant.

Gemini Nano Limitations for Unlocked Devices

For users who modify their devices, Google has issued a crucial warning regarding the Gemini Nano features. Those who unlock their bootloaders have noticed the disappearance of essential functionalities such as Writing Tools, on-device summaries, and AI-driven recording capabilities. This situation has been acknowledged in a recent update to the ML Kit Gen API documentation, where Google explicitly states that an ‘AICore failed’ error will occur if the device’s bootloader is unlocked.

This means that any applications relying on Gemini Nano for tasks such as proofreading or summarizing will not function on unlocked devices. Google’s decision to communicate this change through developer documentation rather than a public announcement has raised eyebrows among the developer community. Users considering unlocking their devices, including upcoming models like the Pixel 9 and 10-series, should weigh the benefits of customization against the loss of AI capabilities.

Innovative Foldable Technology in the Pixel 10 Pro Fold

In another noteworthy update, Google introduced the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Despite its design being reminiscent of last year’s model, the company emphasizes that significant technological advancements lie beneath the familiar exterior. The standout feature is the new gearless hinge mechanism, which replaces the traditional four-gear setup with a CAM system that converts rotational to linear motion.

This innovation offers several advantages: it reduces dust accumulation, enhances water and dust resistance (IP68 rating), and results in fewer moving parts, which contributes to a smoother opening and closing experience. The slimmer hinge design also allows for a larger 6.4-inch outer display and a more substantial 5,015 mAh battery, addressing user feedback for enhanced performance.

Design chief Claude Zellweger noted that the team opted for an “aggressive leap” in design, incorporating polished hinges and refined aesthetics that contribute to a more premium feel. As a result, while the exterior may appear similar, substantial enhancements are present in the device’s functionality.

Wear OS 6 Update for Pixel Watch 2 and 3

Google is also rolling out Wear OS 6 (Android 16) updates to the Pixel Watch 2 and 3. The update, identified as build BP3A.250905.014.W3, is now available for both LTE and Wi-Fi models. Key features of this update include a complete redesign with Material You, a revamped lockscreen keypad, themed Quick Settings, and an enhanced user interface.

Despite the original Pixel Watch being guaranteed updates until October 2025, it has not yet received this latest update. Given that this rollout occurs quarterly, it is anticipated that the original model will still be updated in the near future.

Google has also released factory images for the Pixel Watch 2, Watch 3, and the new Watch 4, all based on Android 16. However, users looking to flash firmware for the Pixel Watch 4 will face a hurdle. Google requires a debug adapter for flashing, which is available only by invitation. This limitation applies to both LTE and Bluetooth/Wi-Fi variants of the new watch.

Should You Upgrade to the Pixel Watch 4?

With the Pixel Watch 4 now available for purchase, potential buyers are weighing the benefits of upgrading. For those currently using the Pixel Watch 3, the enhancements may not be significant enough to warrant an upgrade. However, users of the original Pixel Watch or the Pixel Watch 2 will find substantial improvements, including faster charging, a larger display, and improved responsiveness.
