FBI Issues Urgent Warning About Rising Sextortion Threats to Minors
On February 7, 2026, coinciding with Safer Internet Day, the FBI alerted the public to the rising threat of sextortion schemes targeting minors. These schemes, which have increasingly affected young individuals, involve adults coercing those under 18 to share sexual images or engage in sexual acts via digital platforms.
The FBI has observed a disturbing trend in sextortion cases, where offenders often masquerade as peers, creating a false sense of trust. Victims may initially believe they are communicating with someone their own age who is interested in a relationship or offering something of value. Once the offender has obtained compromising material, they threaten to distribute it unless the victim provides more explicit content or financial compensation.
Understanding the Risks and Consequences
Acting Special Agent in Charge Josh Delmanzo of the FBI Kansas City Division emphasized the seriousness of these crimes. “These types of crimes are some of the most abhorrent we work at the FBI, and we’ve committed a large number of resources to combat this effort. But we can’t do it alone,” he stated. Delmanzo urged community members to raise awareness about the dangers children face online.
The emotional turmoil caused by sextortion can be overwhelming for young victims. Feelings of shame, fear, and confusion often prevent them from seeking help or reporting the abuse. The situation becomes even more complex when financial extortion enters the equation. The FBI reports a notable increase in cases where offenders demand money or gift cards in exchange for not releasing explicit material. Unfortunately, paying the demanded amount does not guarantee that the offender will refrain from sharing the content.
Strategies for Prevention and Support
It is crucial for caretakers and young individuals to understand how sextortion occurs and to engage in open discussions about online safety. Victims need to realize they are not at fault and that they should report any exploitation. The FBI encourages individuals to reach out for assistance by contacting 1-800-CALL-FBI or by submitting tips online at tips.fbi.gov. Additionally, the FBI’s Child Victim Services Program provides vital support to young victims of federal crimes, ensuring that interactions are age-appropriate and minimize trauma.
Since its inception in 2001, the FBI’s Victim Assistance Program has helped nearly 2 million victims through services like crisis intervention and local referrals for counseling and housing. Awareness and sensible online safety practices can significantly mitigate the risks of online exploitation.
To empower children, the FBI recommends the following safety measures:
- Be selective about sharing personal information online.
- Exercise caution with individuals encountered for the first time online, and block or ignore messages from strangers.
- Recognize that online personas may not be genuine; images can be altered or stolen.
- Be wary of requests to switch communication platforms.
- Understand that any content shared online may become public.
- Encourage open dialogue about uncomfortable online interactions and remind them they can seek help.
For parents and guardians, discussing sextortion with children can foster awareness and resilience. The FBI suggests initiating conversations about online safety and the importance of reporting any suspicious behavior. To report suspected sextortion, individuals can contact their nearest FBI field office or call 1-800-CALL-FBI (225-5324). Reports can also be made through the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children at report.cybertip.org.
The FBI’s proactive approach on this Safer Internet Day serves as a crucial reminder of the ongoing need for vigilance and education in protecting young individuals from the dangers that lurk online.
