elementaryOS 8.1 Beta Update Enhances Security and Usability

The beta release of elementaryOS 8.1 introduces significant enhancements focused on security, multitasking, and app management. Announced by Danielle Foré, Founder and CEO of elementaryOS, this update aims to refine the user experience while addressing feedback from the community. The beta version of 8.1 builds on features introduced in version 8, particularly the Secure Session, which uses Wayland to enhance user privacy. Another notable security feature is the dimming of the screen when an app requires sudo authentication. The App Center has also received updates, now showing percentage-based ratings for applications, which are sourced from a ratings server similar to that used by GNOME Software. The action button label has been changed from “Free” to “Install” to eliminate confusion, and updates to apps and the system have been separated for clearer management.

Miscellaneous Improvements and Features

In addition to the primary updates, elementaryOS 8.1 includes a range of miscellaneous enhancements. It now supports ARM64 devices, offers fractional scaling in Secure Session, and features improved stylus detection in Wacom settings. The Bluetooth settings window has been redesigned for better usability, and Airplane Mode no longer disables Bluetooth functionality.

Users can also directly deny apps access to send notification bubbles, helping to maintain a distraction-free environment. A new setting allows for automatic connection to networks, alongside default applications for system monitoring and mapping.
