East Union Twp. Board Enacts Stricter Regulations for Data Centers
The East Union Township Board of Supervisors has taken significant action regarding future data center developments by adopting a new zoning ordinance during a special meeting. This meeting, held on January 15, 2024, at the East Union Municipal Building, was attended by a full room of residents and stakeholders, all eager to hear about the implications of the new regulations.
The board unanimously approved the ordinance, which is effective immediately, to establish comprehensive guidelines for potential data centers. While no construction proposals have been submitted as of yet, the ordinance represents a proactive approach by the township to manage the potential impact of such developments.
Kyle Mummey, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, emphasized the purpose of the ordinance, stating, “This ordinance doesn’t make it harder, necessarily, for data centers to be built in the township. It’s very difficult for us to do something like that. What this amendment does is give us the ability to regulate any potential data centers that could try to set up shop here in the future.”
Regulations Addressing Community Concerns
The newly adopted ordinance outlines specific regulations that will govern the construction and operation of data centers, including necessary ancillary structures like cooling systems, emergency generators, water tanks, and fencing. The guidelines are designed to address various operational aspects, such as equipment usage and adherence to noise and light pollution standards.
These measures aim to safeguard the quality of life for residents by establishing tolerances for potential disturbances arising from data center operations. Mummey noted, “As of adopting this ordinance, the township hasn’t been approached with any construction proposals yet. Now, if we do get a proposal, we have a much larger say in the matter of what they can and cannot do.”
The decision aligns with a broader trend among municipalities in Northeast Pennsylvania (NEPA) to regulate data center developments, reflecting a growing concern over the potential impacts of such facilities on local communities.
Future Implications for East Union Township
As technology continues to evolve, the demand for data centers is likely to increase. East Union Township’s ordinance positions the municipality to better manage these developments should proposals arise in the future. The regulatory framework aims not only to accommodate potential economic growth but also to maintain the township’s residential character and quality of life.
With the ordinance now in place, community members are encouraged to engage with local officials about any concerns regarding future developments. The board’s proactive stance highlights the importance of balancing technological advancement with community well-being, ensuring that residents have a voice in shaping the future of East Union Township.
