Commodore 64 Returns to Production After 30-Year Hiatus

The iconic Commodore 64 is back in production for the first time in 30 years. Following the acquisition of the original brand and assets, the new Commodore 64 Ultimate units are beginning to roll off the assembly line, with some expected to reach customers before the holiday season. This announcement comes from Commodore CEO Peri Fractic, also known as Christian Simpson, who shared a video from the assembly floor showcasing the revival of this classic computer.

Originally launched in 1982, the Commodore 64 was a staple of early home computing and gaming. The new version is being developed with input from original executives, including Leonard Tramiel, former Vice President of Atari, who played a significant role in the creation of the original model. The Commodore brand ceased production of computers in 1994, making this return a significant moment for enthusiasts and collectors alike.

A Nostalgic Recreation with Modern Features

The Commodore 64 Ultimate aims to be a faithful replica of the original system. As stated on the Commodore.net website, “This is no replica. This is no emulation. This is Commodore.” Unlike other retro consoles that replaced key components, the Ultimate version features a “faithful recreation of the original motherboard.”

While it retains the classic design, the new model integrates modern technology. The system includes HDMI and USB-3 ports, as well as an Ethernet connection and Wi-Fi capabilities. Enhanced memory and sound processors promise improved performance, allowing users to enjoy over 10,000 original games and utilize retro peripherals such as dusty cartridges, CRT televisions, and disk drives.

The nostalgic appeal of the Commodore 64 resonates deeply with many individuals who remember it as their first personal computer. Users fondly recall playing classic games like International Soccer and Pit Stop, while also relying on the system for school assignments.
