Apple’s iPhone 17 Colors Disappoint, Reviving Mid-Year Launches Could Help

The upcoming launch of the iPhone 17 series on September 9, 2023, has sparked discussions about its new color options, which some enthusiasts find underwhelming. While Apple is expected to release advanced handsets, the reported shades do not appear to excite many fans. Among the anticipated models—the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max—the colors seem safe, featuring the usual black, white, gray, and silver, with only a few new options that fail to impress.
Specifically, the iPhone 17 Air is rumored to feature an off-white or gold-tinged color similar to the iPhone 16 Pro’s Desert Titanium finish. Additionally, there is speculation about a new blue colorway, which, while fresh, lacks the vibrancy expected of a new release. The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are said to carry an orange finish, which, although notable, does not evoke the same excitement as previous standout colors such as the glowing gold models of years past.
For the standard iPhone 17, there are hints of blue, purple, and green options alongside traditional colors. These shades reportedly strike a balance between the pastels of the iPhone 15 and the bolder hues seen in the iPhone 16. While these colors may be more visually appealing than their higher-tier counterparts, the overall selection still lacks the punch many expect from an Apple release.
The Potential of a Mid-Year Refresh
Historically, Apple has engaged in a mid-cycle color refresh, which helped maintain interest in the current generation of iPhones. During the iPhone 12 series, a bold purple was introduced midway through its lifecycle. Similarly, the iPhone 13 lineup saw the addition of a striking green, and the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus received a bright yellow tone. This approach not only revitalized the product line but also catered to consumers who may not have been satisfied with the launch colors.
Contrastingly, the iPhone 15 series did not introduce any new colors after its release, raising concerns that the upcoming models might follow suit. The absence of a mid-year refresh could mean that the iPhone 17 series will launch without any additional color options, potentially diminishing its appeal.
Apple’s playful side often comes through in these mid-year updates, and reviving this tradition could provide much-needed excitement for the new lineup. The standard model could benefit from adding options like a muted green or lilac, which would diversify the selection without eliminating the classic black and grey options.
Addressing the Color Variety in Premium Models
A notable trend with Apple’s previous mid-year color releases is that they have primarily been reserved for base models, with fewer options offered for the iPhone Pro series. The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max were the exceptions, receiving the attractive Alpine Green. This trend raises the question of why premium models often lack vibrant color choices. Many power users would likely appreciate a more colorful device, especially when compared to the muted tones that have characterized the Pro range.
While the new orange option for the Pro models may seem like an attempt to introduce vibrancy, it appears more subdued than anticipated. A more striking color palette could enhance the desirability of these premium handsets.
Ultimately, while the color of a smartphone does not affect its performance, it plays a significant role in personal expression for many users. Introducing a mid-cycle refresh could bring a much-needed sense of fun and individuality to the iPhone 17 series, enhancing its appeal among consumers eager for fresh options. As the launch date approaches, the tech community awaits Apple’s next move, hopeful for a return to more diverse color offerings in the future.
