Apple Unveils ‘Preview’ App in iOS 26: A New Document Tool
Apple has launched the Preview app as part of its latest operating system update, iOS 26. This addition aims to enhance document management for iPhone and iPad users, providing a powerful tool for editing and annotating PDFs, images, and documents. Available for free, Preview is designed to offer a touch-optimized experience similar to its macOS counterpart.
The introduction of Preview aligns with Apple’s ongoing strategy to deliver innovative features with each iOS iteration. This app allows users to access files saved in the Files app, scan new PDFs using their device’s camera, and perform a range of editing functions—all within a single platform. Users can annotate documents, create new images, and utilize familiar Apple features such as Autofill, stickers, and Markup.
With Preview, users gain extensive control over their documents. The app supports various editing capabilities, including resizing, rotating, cropping, and flipping images. It is particularly beneficial for iPad users equipped with the Apple Pencil, who can leverage the device’s precision to enhance their editing experience. For all users, the app allows easy export of documents in multiple formats, including HEIC, JPEG, and PDF, with customizable options for resolution and size.
Positive User Reception and Feedback
Initial responses from users indicate a favorable reception for the Preview app. Although reviews remain limited, the application currently holds an impressive aggregate score of 4.6 out of 5 on the Apple Store. Many users appreciate its robust capabilities, while some critics have suggested that integrating these functions directly into the existing Files app would have been more efficient.
Discussions on platforms like Reddit reflect a mixed sentiment regarding the separation of Preview and the Files app. Some users commend Preview for its ability to handle large PDF files without crashing, while others argue that such functionality should have been part of the Files app. Nonetheless, there are opinions supporting the decision to keep the apps distinct, emphasizing that PDF markup and annotation should remain separate from file management tasks.
As Apple continues to innovate, the introduction of the Preview app in iOS 26 highlights the company’s commitment to enhancing user experience through advanced technology. For those eager to explore its features, Preview offers a significant upgrade to mobile document handling, making it a noteworthy addition to Apple’s suite of applications.
