Apple TV 4K Update: How to Disable New Profile Selector Feature

Apple’s recent update to the Apple TV 4K, with the launch of tvOS 26, introduced a new feature that may not be welcomed by all users. The update brought enhancements, including a redesigned user interface and new screensavers, but it also added a Profile Selector screen that appears each time the device is turned on. This requirement to select a user profile can be cumbersome for those who primarily use the device alone.

With the Profile Selector feature, every time a user activates the Apple TV 4K—whether from sleep mode or a complete shutdown—they must choose which family member’s account to use. This is a significant change for users who share their Apple TV with others, as it offers tailored recommendations and settings based on individual profiles. While profile functionality has existed in previous versions of tvOS, it was often overlooked due to its placement within multiple settings menus. The introduction of a more visible Profile Selector aims to make profiles more accessible.

For users who primarily watch content alone, like Mayor of Kingstown on Paramount+, this new screen can feel unnecessary. Fortunately, Apple has made it easy to disable this feature. Users can quickly turn off the Profile Selector by following these steps:

1. Turn on the Apple TV.
2. Open the Settings app.
3. Select Profiles and Accounts.
4. Under the Choose Profile On Wake option, set it to off.
5. For Suggested Profiles, choose to hide them.

Once these changes are made, the Apple TV 4K will default to the last profile used, streamlining the viewing experience.

It is important to note that disabling the Profile Selector does not remove the profile functionality entirely. Users can still access different profiles by opening the Control Center, which can be done by holding down the TV button on the Siri Remote. This menu allows users to switch profiles or add new ones seamlessly.

In addition to the Profile Selector, the tvOS 26.2 update further improved user experience by allowing the creation of guest profiles. This new feature does not require linking to an Apple ID, simplifying the process for users who may want to share their Apple TV without granting full access to their personal accounts.

As Apple continues to enhance the Apple TV 4K, users can expect further updates that balance personalization with convenience, ensuring that all viewers can enjoy their favorite content with ease.
