Apple Prepares for Major MacBook Pro and Air Upgrades in 2026
Recent reports indicate that Apple is planning significant updates to its MacBook lineup, although a release is not imminent. According to noted leaker Mark Gurman in his “Power On” newsletter for Bloomberg, new models of the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and Mac Studio are expected in early 2026. This timeline suggests that customers may need to wait longer than anticipated for these upgrades.
Currently, the M5 chip has only been integrated into the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro. Gurman suggests that Apple aims to expand the M5 generation across its entire Mac ecosystem with a comprehensive launch early next year. This new lineup is poised to include various updates across both desktop and portable models, catering to a wide range of users.
Upcoming Mac Models and Features
The anticipated updates will reportedly feature several enhancements. The MacBook Air, available in both 13-inch and 15-inch versions, is expected to receive a spec-bump update, primarily involving the new M5 chip. Although there are discussions about an OLED display upgrade, that is not likely to materialize until at least 2028.
The MacBook Pro will follow a similar path, receiving updates with the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips early in 2026. A more substantial redesign featuring an OLED display is anticipated by the end of that year. Additionally, Apple is reportedly working on a budget-friendly MacBook, which may utilize a less powerful chip, such as the A15 or A18 Pro, to keep costs low.
Updates are also expected for the Mac mini and Mac Studio, with each receiving the M5 chip and its Pro variants. The Mac Studio is likely to feature the M5 Max, though details about its Ultra variant remain unclear.
Display Innovations on the Horizon
In addition to upgrades in the Mac lineup, there are potential enhancements to the Apple Studio Display. Rumors suggest that Apple might introduce two new monitors: one being an updated 27-inch model that would replace the existing 5K display with MiniLED backlighting, and another larger monitor possibly reaching 32 inches with a resolution bump to either 6K or 7K.
Gurman’s insights are particularly noteworthy given his track record for reliable leaks regarding Apple products. His predictions lend credibility to the expectations for upcoming launches, especially considering the rapid development cycles observed in Apple’s recent history. Notably, there were only five months between the launches of the M3 and M4 chips, indicating that Apple is not hesitant to maintain a brisk pace for its Apple Silicon generational updates.
As Apple gears up for these anticipated releases, the tech community is closely monitoring developments. The upcoming roster of products promises to deliver exciting advancements that may enhance user experience and solidify Apple’s position in the competitive laptop market.
