Whipple Observatory to Close Amid Federal Government Shutdown
The **Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory**, part of the **Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory**, will close to the public after **October 11, 2023**, if the ongoing federal government shutdown is not resolved by that date. Located on **Mount Hopkins**, near **Amado**, Arizona, the observatory’s science center will operate one last time on **October 10, 2023**, from **10:00 to 15:00** local time.
The Smithsonian Institution announced that all its museums and research centers, including the Whipple Observatory, will remain open until **October 11**. The potential closure highlights the impact of the federal budget impasse on cultural and scientific institutions, which rely heavily on government funding.
Visitors interested in experiencing the observatory’s programs and exhibits are encouraged to attend before the possible shutdown. The Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory is renowned for its contributions to astronomy and astrophysics, making this closure a significant loss for both the scientific community and the general public.
Should the shutdown continue beyond the stated date, the observatory plans to reassess its operations in line with federal guidelines. The situation remains fluid, with officials urging for a swift resolution to avoid extended disruption to services and public access.
The observatory serves as a vital resource for research and education, providing insights into the universe that are crucial for both scientific progress and public interest. As the situation develops, updates will be communicated through official channels, ensuring that visitors and stakeholders are informed of any changes to the observatory’s status.
