Viral Video Misidentified as Comet 3I/ATLAS Revealed as Organism
A recent viral video claiming to show new footage of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS has been debunked. The video, which circulated on social media, actually depicts a microscopic organism rather than a celestial body. This misinformation was first shared in a post on X by the user @BGatesIsaPyscho on October 27, 2025, generating considerable attention online.
The video lacks any affiliation with recognized astronomical agencies. It shows a paramecium, a single-celled organism typically found in freshwater environments. A reverse image search conducted on October 29, 2025 did not yield relevant results, but it revealed that the AI-driven search engine incorrectly identified the organism as Comet 3I/ATLAS.
To clarify the identity of the organism in the video, Lead Stories reached out to Jack A. Gilbert, a leading microbiologist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego. In an email response, Gilbert confirmed, “That is a paramecium – freshwater I believe – although better phase contrast, and where it was found, would be ideal for better identification.” His expertise reinforces the notion that the video is misrepresentative.
Currently, the NASA website dedicated to Comet 3I/ATLAS indicates it is not being updated due to a lapse in federal government funding. The site has not posted new multimedia content since earlier in the summer, with the last updates occurring in July and August 2025. The most recent images from NASA do not resemble the viral video, further supporting the claim of misinformation.
Another credible source, the National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory (NOIRLab), released a photograph on September 4, 2025, showing Comet 3I/ATLAS moving through a dense star field. This image, captured by the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph at Cerro Pachón in Chile, illustrates the comet’s movement against the backdrop of stars, which appear as colorful streaks.
In summary, the viral video misidentified as footage of Comet 3I/ATLAS has been confirmed as showing a paramecium, a common microorganism. As misinformation continues to spread rapidly on social media, the importance of verifying such claims through credible scientific sources remains paramount.
