Southern Arizona Fire Departments Enhance Safety with New Gas Monitor Technology

Several fire departments in southern Arizona have adopted advanced technology aimed at improving safety during hazardous material incidents. The new GX6100 monitor enables crews to detect up to seven different gases, providing critical information that enhances their ability to respond effectively in emergencies.

During their annual hazmat training, fire departments across the region are utilizing the GX6100 to prepare for potential threats. Tucson Fire Captain Tanner Monje recently led a training session at the Avra Valley Fire Station, where multiple agencies collaborated to learn how to operate the new device in hazardous situations.

Monje emphasized the importance of unity among agencies, stating, “You have agencies such as Tucson Fire Department, Northwest, Goulder, Avra, Drexel Heights, Rural Metro; everyone’s here together to ensure we can effectively manage these incidents when they arise.” This collective effort is designed to streamline the response process and bolster community safety.

At the training, Todd Davis, the Hazmat Coordinator, highlighted the monitor’s capabilities. “This gives us the capability to monitor for CO2 poisonings at people’s houses. This gives us the capability to monitor hazmat scenes to render the public safe and maintain safe working conditions for our members,” Davis explained. The GX6100 monitor alerts crews immediately if it detects harmful substances in the air, allowing for prompt action.

Tucson Fire Department conducts these hazmat training sessions every December, inviting various fire departments from across southern Arizona to participate. “It’s a culmination of all the training we did that year to bring it all together and bring our regional partners together for one significant year-end drill,” Davis noted.

The collaborative training aims to ensure that if a hazardous materials incident occurs, all participants are well-prepared to respond swiftly and effectively. “It’s a good opportunity to get everyone together, make sure we’re all operating on the same page, and working as a team,” Davis added. While such incidents are infrequent, the importance of readiness remains paramount for the safety of the community.

This initiative not only reinforces the capabilities of the fire departments but also strengthens inter-agency relationships, ultimately leading to safer environments for residents of southern Arizona.
