Elon Musk recently revealed that he underwent an MRI and shared the results with his AI chatbot, Grok. During an interview with podcaster Peter Diamandis, Musk stated that both Grok and his medical professionals found no issues with the MRI. This incident illustrates a growing trend where individuals are increasingly seeking the assistance of AI technologies to complement traditional medical advice.

Musk disclosed his experience on the “Moonshots” podcast, emphasizing the potential of AI in healthcare. “I did an MRI recently and submitted it to Grok,” he explained. “None of the doctors nor Grok found anything.” It remains unclear why Musk chose to undergo the MRI, but his comments reflect the broader conversation about health and longevity that is becoming prevalent in discussions about AI’s future capabilities.

In recent years, figures in Silicon Valley, including OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Peter Thiel, have invested heavily in research aimed at combating aging and enhancing human lifespan. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, suggested in 2024 that AI could potentially double life expectancy by 2030.

Musk encouraged others to consider using Grok for their health inquiries. He recounted a story about a Norwegian man who credited Grok with saving his life after the chatbot prompted him to return to the hospital, leading to a critical diagnosis of a nearly ruptured appendix. “Try it!” Musk advised on social media, referring to a previous discussion on Joe Rogan’s podcast, where he claimed that AI would be “very good” at assisting with medical diagnoses.

Debating the Future of Longevity

While Musk promotes the use of AI for health purposes, he also expressed caution regarding the concept of immortality. He remarked that true immortality might be “one of the worst curses you could possibly give anyone.” Nonetheless, he is optimistic about advancements in longevity, stating, “I’ve long thought that longevity or semi-mortality is an extremely solvable problem.”

Musk believes that the biological aging process is straightforward enough to address, as he noted, “the clock must be incredibly obvious.” His comments come amidst growing public interest in longevity treatments and technologies.

Diamandis, who co-founded Fountain Life, a company focused on longevity solutions, discussed the potential benefits of AI-guided diagnostics during the podcast. Fountain Life offers various membership tiers that provide access to advanced testing for biomarkers. Diamandis emphasized the goal of preventing avoidable deaths, stating, “don’t die of anything stupid.”

He elaborated on the comprehensive approach taken by Fountain Life, which includes extensive data collection about individuals, such as full genome sequences and medical imaging. This robust data set aims to identify health risks early, reflecting a shift towards proactive healthcare.

Musk’s proactive approach to his health resonates particularly in light of the untimely death of Steve Jobs, the visionary leader of Apple, who passed away in 2011 from pancreatic cancer. Jobs, according to biographer Walter Isaacson, regretted delaying surgical intervention for his condition. This underlines the critical importance of timely medical attention, a sentiment echoed by Musk’s advocacy for utilizing AI in health management.

The conversation surrounding AI’s role in healthcare is increasingly relevant as technology continues to evolve. As more individuals like Musk explore the intersection of AI and medicine, the implications for the future of health and longevity are vast and complex.
