Cornell Leaders Forge Global Connections at Shanghai Forum
In early November 2023, leaders from Cornell University engaged with alumni and academic partners across China and Asia during a multistop trip that culminated in the sixth annual Cornell-China Forum held in Shanghai. This significant event, organized by the Cornell China Center, provided a platform for Cornellians, Chinese scholars, and industry experts to address pressing global challenges, including the evolving landscape of higher education, sustainable development, and the impact of artificial intelligence on learning.
The forum featured a series of panels that fostered cross-disciplinary collaboration and showcased innovative solutions to complex issues. The delegation included Cornell President Michael Kotlikoff, Vice Provost for International Affairs Wendy Wolford, and deans from various colleges, including the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Veterinary Medicine, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and the Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management.
This forum was one of several key events on a packed itinerary that spanned multiple cities. While some members of the delegation visited Peking University in Beijing to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the China and Asia-Pacific Studies (CAPS) program, others traveled to Guangzhou to launch the Cornell-China Sustainability Project. This initiative will initially concentrate on the sustainable intensification of rice cultivation, addressing food security in the region.
In addition to academic engagements, university leaders took the opportunity to connect with alumni in Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, and Hong Kong. These interactions not only reinforced existing ties but also opened avenues for future collaborations that could enhance the university’s impact in various sectors.
The discussions at the forum and throughout the trip highlighted the importance of international cooperation in tackling global issues. Attendees shared insights and strategies aimed at improving educational practices and addressing societal challenges. As the world continues to change rapidly, initiatives like these play a crucial role in shaping the future of higher education and sustainable development.
