John (Jack) Paul Brown, a cherished member of the San Pedro community, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2025, at the age of 92. Surrounded by his loving family, Jack’s life was a testament to dedication, family values, and community spirit.

Born on March 10, 1933, to Robert and Agnes Brown in Long Beach, California, Jack’s early years were marked by fond memories of San Pedro. He often reminisced about catching tadpoles at Averill Park and selling newspapers to sailors arriving in port. Jack’s commitment to service began during World War II, when he accompanied his father as a Civilian Air Warden.

Jack’s educational journey included attending Mary Star of the Sea Elementary School and St. Anthony’s High School in Long Beach. Before the construction of the Vincent Thomas Bridge, he took a ferry across the harbor to reach school. His high school years were highlighted by a passion for sports, particularly distance running, where he earned multiple accolades on the track team. He continued this pursuit in college while earning a degree in Drafting.

Following his studies, Jack began his career at Northrop Grumman. Later, he ventured into entrepreneurship, establishing his own business and employing many friends and colleagues he had met throughout his journey.

Family Life and Community Involvement

In 1969, Jack met the love of his life, Rita Cebula, and they married on April 17, 1971. Together, they welcomed two children, Dennis and Julie. The couple was deeply involved in their local church, with Rita dedicating 25 years to teaching at Holy Trinity.

Jack’s interests extended beyond work and family. He enjoyed family vacations, gardening, and sports, along with DIY projects and coin collecting. Known for his unique sense of humor, he brought joy to those around him. Each morning began with a cup of coffee, a crossword puzzle, and a keen interest in the stock market.

Jack is survived by his children, Dennis and Julie, his grandchildren, Natalie and Vincent, his sister Agnes Welsh, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Rita, his parents Robert and Agnes, his brother Robert, his sister Phyllis Smith, and nephews Bob and Tom Smith.

Memorial Services

A funeral mass will take place on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Holy Trinity Church, followed by a burial at Green Hills Memorial Park. Family and friends are encouraged to sign the guestbook at mcnerneysmortuary.com as a way to honor Jack’s legacy and impact on the community.

Jack’s life serves as a reminder of the importance of family, friendship, and community engagement. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
