Community Leader Cathy McCurdy Passes Away at 74
Catherine “Cathy” Shea McCurdy, a beloved community leader and educator, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home on December 3, 2025, at the age of 74. Her death was attributed to complications related to diabetes, a condition she battled for many years.
Born in Queens, New York, to Raymond and Erma “Susie” Shea, Cathy spent her formative years in Hermosa Beach, California. She graduated from Redondo Union High School in 1969 and later married Richard H. “Dick” McCurdy in 1978. The couple became well-known figures in the local community, not only for their work in the glass business at Shea Company but also for their extensive volunteer efforts.
Dedication to Community Service
Cathy’s contributions to Hermosa Beach extended far beyond her professional life. She served on the Hermosa Beach School Board and dedicated many years to the Hermosa Valley School, where she was instrumental in founding the Kiwanis Builders Club. Her commitment to education was also evident through her support of the Hermosa Beach Education Foundation and the Sister City Association.
In addition to her educational contributions, Cathy represented Hermosa Beach on the Los Angeles County Beach Commission for nearly a decade. Her leadership and advocacy for community welfare earned her recognition as “Hermosa Beach Woman of the Year” in 1998, solidifying her legacy as a dedicated public servant.
Cathy and Dick both played active roles in the Kiwanis Club of Hermosa Beach, where they served in various capacities, including the presidency. Their involvement in this organization reflected their shared commitment to improving the lives of residents in their community.
Memorial Services Planned
Cathy McCurdy’s funeral services will be held on February 21, 2026, at 11 a.m. at St. Cross Episcopal Church, located at 1818 Monterey Blvd., Hermosa Beach. Following the service, family and friends are invited to celebrate her life at the Kiwanis Hall, situated at 2515 Valley Drive.
As the community mourns the loss of Cathy McCurdy, her contributions and dedication to public service will be remembered by all who had the privilege to know her. Through her tireless work and commitment to education and community welfare, she leaves behind a lasting impact that will be felt for years to come.
