Beloved Educator and Nature Enthusiast David Brest Passes Away

David E. Brest, a respected educator and devoted family man, passed away peacefully at the age of 85, surrounded by his beloved wife, Patricia Brest. His passing marks the end of a life rich in love, learning, and a profound connection to the natural world.

Born in San Gabriel, California, Brest was the youngest of three boys, growing up with a passion for nature that blossomed during family camping trips. He and his twin brother, Dennis, often explored the outdoors, laying the foundation for a lifelong appreciation of the environment. Brest pursued his academic interests at the University of Oregon where he studied Forestry, later earning a PhD in Biology from UCLA. This educational journey sparked a friendly rivalry with his brother, who was loyal to USC.

Brest dedicated 35 years to teaching in the Biology Department at California State University, Dominguez Hills, until his retirement in 2003. He became known for his engaging teaching style, often sharing his knowledge of photosynthesis in both light-hearted and serious family moments.

The connection between David and Patricia began at CSUDH, where her admiration for his humor and intellect led to their marriage in June 1987. Together, they formed a strong partnership, marked by David’s unwavering support and calm demeanor. He was a nurturing figure in both his immediate family and the broader community, known for his patience and ability to resolve conflicts with ease.

David’s love for the outdoors was reflected in numerous family camping trips to iconic locations such as Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Pismo Beach, and Sequoia National Park. These experiences left lasting memories for his family, who remember him as a steady presence, a “lighthouse on stormy days.”

Following his passing, David’s ashes will be scattered in a sequoia grove next to the meadow where he and Patricia exchanged vows, symbolizing his enduring connection to nature and family. He is survived by Patricia, stepchildren Gayle Heifetz, Shelley Merrill, and Fred (Cris) Pabst, along with grandchildren Kai and Alex Heifetz, Allie and Connor Merrill, Casey and Jay Pabst, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

David Brest’s legacy as a dedicated educator, loving husband, and passionate naturalist will continue to resonate with those who knew him. His family will cherish the memories of his life, reflecting the warmth and love he brought to their lives.
