Axiom Space Appoints Emiliano Ventura to Lead New Astronaut Training Program

Axiom Space has announced the appointment of Portuguese physiologist Emiliano Ventura as the first leader of its new initiative, “Project Astronaut.” This announcement was made during the 2025 International Astronautical Congress held on October 17, 2023. Ventura, who is the director of the Motor & Sport Institute (MSI) Bio Performance Center, will oversee a pilot program designed to refine astronaut training protocols as Axiom prepares for the launch of its first commercial space station module.
The “Project Astronaut” program aims to establish a six-month astronaut training protocol, leveraging Ventura’s extensive background in physiology and sports science. In his statement, Ventura expressed his enthusiasm for combining his expertise in human performance with astronaut training. “This program not only advances scientific research but also inspires the people of Portugal and the global community to engage with the future of space exploration,” he said.
Ventura’s relationship with Axiom Space is not new; the MSI Bio Performance Center has collaborated with the organization since at least January 2024, when Axiom Mission 3 launched. The new training program will include various elements such as centrifuge training, parabolic flights, altitude chamber exercises, outdoor leadership skills, and spacesuit operations. Ventura’s goal is to enhance understanding of how the human body adapts to microgravity environments, a critical aspect of future space missions.
Michael López-Alegría, Axiom Space’s Chief Astronaut, noted that Ventura’s unique combination of skills makes him an ideal candidate to lead this initiative. “Project Astronaut embodies Axiom Space’s dedication to mission readiness and continuous improvement,” he stated. López-Alegría, along with fellow astronauts Peggy Whitson and Koichi Wakata, will participate in training alongside Ventura, ensuring that experienced astronauts are integrated into the new program.
This initiative comes at a time when the International Space Station is nearing the end of its operational lifespan. While it remains uncertain whether Ventura will fly to the ISS or the future Axiom Station, the company continues to develop its private astronaut missions. NASA is currently evaluating plans for its fifth and sixth private missions to the ISS. Axiom Space has already secured contracts for the first four missions, with Axiom Mission 4 concluding in mid-July 2023.
With the space industry evolving rapidly, Axiom Space’s focus on training and preparation reflects its commitment to facilitating safe and effective commercial space endeavors. The integration of scientific research with practical astronaut training positions Axiom Space at the forefront of the new era of human spaceflight.
