Young Flute Prodigy from Bloomfield Secures Juilliard Spot

At just 14 years old, Chideha Osondu has achieved a remarkable milestone by earning a place in the prestigious Music Advancement Program at the Juilliard School. This accomplishment not only highlights her exceptional talent but also illustrates the powerful support she received from her community in Bloomfield, New Jersey.
Osondu’s journey to Juilliard was filled with challenges and moments of self-doubt. “They told me I won and I was in shock because I didn’t think there was a chance I would get that far,” Osondu recalled, reflecting on the moment she learned about her acceptance. Despite her obvious talent, she admitted feeling overwhelmed during the audition. “I was so scared,” she said. “I was even on the verge of crying; I was like, I don’t think this is for me.”
The encouragement from her parents, as well as the guidance from the musical director and the head of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, played a crucial role in her success. Father Larry Fama shared how the church community welcomed Osondu, stating, “We’re new to the parish. We opened just after COVID. They said, ‘we think our daughter has a talent. What can we do? How can she let that talent blossom?’ And the rest is history.” Osondu has since become an integral part of the church, performing during mass services and showcasing her versatility as a musician.
Her dedication to music is evident in her skill set. Osondu started playing the flute just three weeks before she began producing a hearable tone. Alongside the flute, she also plays the piano, trumpet, and several types of saxophones. Her mother, Chinwe Osondu, noted that her daughter’s competitive spirit drives her to excel. “She’s the one that’s like, I will do more than my brothers are doing, so she plays all five instruments,” Chinwe said.
The support from St. Thomas the Apostle Church did not stop at musical guidance. They encouraged Osondu to apply for scholarships, helping her pursue her aspirations in music. Her talent has blossomed into what she describes as a heavenly gift, enhanced by the love and prayers of her family and community.
Osondu’s story illustrates the profound impact of community support on young talent. As she embarks on this new chapter at Juilliard, her journey serves as an inspiration for aspiring musicians everywhere. The collaboration between her family and the church highlights how collective encouragement can nurture the dreams of youth and pave the way for future success.
As she prepares for this next step, Osondu remains grounded and focused on her craft, embodying the spirit of a true virtuoso. Her achievements at such a young age signal a promising future in the world of music, one that many will be watching closely.
