Wyatt Family Donates $5 Million to Santa Barbara Health Clinics
The Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics has received a transformative donation of $5 million from the Wyatt family, marking the largest family contribution in the organization’s history. This significant gift will enable the establishment of the new flagship facility, which will be named the Wyatt Family Health Center, located on Santa Barbara’s Westside.
The announcement was made on March 14, 2024, by Mahdi Ashrafian, CEO of the clinics. He expressed gratitude for the donation, highlighting its importance as a long-term partnership aimed at enhancing community health. “This is not only the largest family gift we’ve ever received — it represents something even more meaningful: a long-term partnership,” Ashrafian stated.
The Wyatt family, known for their philanthropic efforts, includes members of the family of Philip Wyatt, founder of Wyatt Technology Corp., a company that manufactures scientific instruments for medical applications. Currently, Wyatt Technology operates as part of Waters Corp., headquartered in Milford, Massachusetts.
The new health care center is projected to accommodate an additional 8,300 patients annually, significantly expanding the clinics’ reach. Currently, the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics serve approximately 20,000 patients each year, focusing on those who are uninsured or underinsured. Laura Wyatt, a family member, emphasized the importance of this new facility: “Thousands of people in our community go without regular checkups, struggle to manage chronic conditions, or miss preventive care because they are uninsured or underinsured. This new facility will provide dignified access to the same high-quality care that insured patients receive. That’s something we believe everyone deserves.”
Scheduled to open in December 2025, the multi-story health center will serve as a hub for four existing clinics, two dental offices, and a separate facility dedicated to substance use disorders. This strategic expansion reflects the organization’s commitment to addressing the health care needs of the community, particularly in underserved areas.
For over 50 years, the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics have been a vital resource, providing care for one in ten residents in the southern region of Santa Barbara County. The clinics are federally funded, ensuring that they cater to those who may not have access to traditional health care options.
In preparation for their substantial gift, members of the Wyatt family took the time to tour the clinics, meet staff, and engage with patients. Their hands-on involvement allowed them to witness the impact of the services provided. Monica Wyatt described the clinics as “the community’s ‘little engine that could’ when it comes to compassion and quality patient care.”
This donation not only represents a financial commitment from the Wyatt family but also signifies a collaborative effort to enhance health care accessibility and improve the overall well-being of the Santa Barbara community.
