Veterans and Community Unite for Dance Lessons at American Legion Post 82

In Nashville, Tennessee, American Legion Post 82 has become a vibrant hub for community engagement, particularly on Tuesday evenings. Each week, veterans and civilians come together for dance lessons, fostering connections that transcend military backgrounds. The dance lessons, held every Tuesday night, are a testament to the role of music and movement in building relationships. “Music is such an integral part of what we do here,” said Shannon Rasmussen, the adjutant at Post 82. She emphasized that these evenings are less about the music itself and more about the communal experience. “Tuesday nights at Post 82 are a time when we bring together the community with our veteran members,” Rasmussen explained.

The dance floor serves as a melting pot where veterans, some with as much as 26 years of service, interact with individuals who may have no military connections. This environment encourages inclusivity and understanding. Rasmussen noted, “There are more than a few people who don’t have a direct connection to anybody who has served.”

Community member Donielle Freeberg, who does not have a military background, finds joy in attending these sessions. “This is still my favorite night of the week to come out,” she shared. Her enthusiasm reflects the welcoming atmosphere cultivated by the Post, where veterans like Josh Hardy, an Army veteran, reconnect with forgotten hobbies. “My wife and I, for the longest time, we weren’t getting out, we weren’t dancing more,” Hardy recalled.

Rasmussen highlighted the importance of these gatherings, stating that many attendees genuinely want to support veterans but often feel uncertain about how to do so. The dance lessons provide a practical way to bridge that gap. “When I’m here, I see family,” Freeberg remarked, underscoring the humanity that emerges in these interactions.
