The University of Jamestown celebrated the arrival of 306 freshmen during its annual convocation held on September 4, 2023, at DeNault Auditorium. The event marked a significant milestone for the new students as they begin their academic journey at the institution.

Kirstie Dobson, the director of campus ministries, opened the ceremony with a reflection on the importance of guidance and purpose in the students’ lives. President Polly Peterson expressed her gratitude to the faculty, acknowledging their dedication to providing a holistic education. “You are a true example of superior guidance and education of the whole person,” Peterson stated. “Thank you for the work that you do and for believing in the vision of UJ.”

Margaux Kautzmann, the student senate president, encouraged both new and returning students to take full advantage of their time at the university. “While making these memories, please slow down and smell the roses. Appreciate the independence and opportunities that you have here,” Kautzmann advised. She emphasized the importance of surrounding oneself with supportive peers, stating, “You have started on a long path to the rest of your life, and the next four years of that journey are going to fly by.”

Emphasizing Virtue and Commitment

Michelle Solensky, vice president for academic affairs, introduced the Leadertown initiative, which focuses on practicing virtue in everyday life. “Virtues are not lofty ideals that feel out of reach. Virtues are habits—patterns of thinking and acting that we can practice every day,” Solensky explained. She highlighted wisdom, courage, and excellence as key virtues within the University of Jamestown’s character initiative, urging students to embrace these values as they navigate their studies.

Maryn Schneider, representing the Class of 2029, shared her class’s enthusiasm and commitment to their educational journey. “Although our past has shaped us, we are prepared to try new things in these challenging situations—it will help us define who each of us will become,” Schneider articulated. “We vow to be fully immersed in the Jimmie experience and continue the excellence in tradition that has been established for years.”

Acknowledging Excellence and Alumni Contributions

During the ceremony, President Peterson presented the Knight Award to Elias Harris, a criminal justice major from the Class of 2026. Harris distinguished himself by being the first to notice and report a fire in the campus cafeteria earlier this year. He was also recognized for his achievements across academics, athletics, and the arts. Peterson remarked, “His quick thinking and sense of duty reflect the spirit of this award.”

Morgan Palmer, director of alumni relations, awarded the Alumni Medallion to Rachel (Perish) Heuchert and Samuel “Sam” Heuchert, both graduates from the Class of 2016. The couple, who were college sweethearts, shared their journey with the students, emphasizing the importance of patience during their time in school. “We could not have predicted the journey nor the outcome when we were in your seats,” Rachel Heuchert conveyed. Sam added, “We like to think about stewardship as how we live out our priorities.”

The convocation, which highlighted the university’s commitment to fostering a supportive and enriching environment, set a positive tone for the academic year ahead. As the University of Jamestown begins this new chapter, the emphasis on community, virtue, and personal growth resonates strongly with both students and faculty alike.
