Tulare Farmer Launches Pumpkin Delivery Service for Halloween Cheer
Erick Mendonca, a farmer from Tulare, California, has launched a unique pumpkin delivery service aimed at enhancing Halloween decorations across the Central Valley. His venture, the Mendonca Pumpkin Co., offers a colorful selection of pumpkins, including rare varieties like warty goblins and Turkish turbans. These pumpkins are quickly becoming essential for seasonal displays in homes and businesses from Tulare to Fresno.
Mendonca, alongside his girlfriend, Alyssa Valdez, provides custom pumpkin packages designed to bring festive flair to porches and storefronts. With a range of 10-15 varieties available, he caters to diverse customer preferences, whether they seek traditional bright orange pumpkins or uniquely shaped gourds. “They’re really pretty and they look good,” Mendonca stated, reflecting on the positive reactions he has received.
From Hobby to Business
Mendonca’s journey in pumpkin cultivation began as a personal project. His family operates a dairy farm in Tulare, and he works as a crop advisor specializing in tree nuts, row crops, corn, wheat, alfalfa, and cotton. Initially, he grew pumpkins for fun, distributing them to friends and family while decorating porches. “The first year, I just grew a bunch,” he recounted. “It kind of took off.” This year marks the first time he has grown enough pumpkins to sell, leading to the establishment of his business.
Each pumpkin display package is priced between $10 and $15, making it an accessible option for many customers. The impact of social media on his business has been significant, with one of his TikTok videos garnering over 3 million views in less than three days. “I was surprised to see how quickly it spread,” Mendonca noted, highlighting the power of digital platforms in promoting local businesses.
Community Engagement and Growth
Mendonca now dedicates his days to delivering pumpkins to various locations, including schools and local businesses throughout the Valley. “All day, every day,” he joked, hinting at the growing demand for his products. Despite the rising popularity, he remains grounded, hoping to maintain a balance between his agricultural career and his new entrepreneurial endeavor.
The Mendonca Pumpkin Co. has not only created a source of income but has also fostered community spirit, with many local residents engaging in the seasonal tradition of pumpkin decorating. As Halloween approaches, Mendonca’s initiative stands as a testament to the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit found in small communities.
This innovative approach to seasonal decoration reflects a broader trend among farmers diversifying their businesses to include direct consumer sales. As the Central Valley prepares for fall festivities, Mendonca’s pumpkins are set to become the centerpiece of many celebrations, proving that sometimes, a simple idea can lead to delightful impacts on the community.
