Therapy Dog Echo Joins Tallapoosa County 911 Dispatch Team
The Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Office has introduced a full-time therapy dog named Echo to its 911 dispatch center, aimed at supporting dispatchers as they navigate the emotional challenges of emergency calls. This initiative responds to the intense pressure faced by call-takers, especially following traumatic incidents.
Echo resides at the sheriff’s office, stationed permanently in the dispatch room. His role is to provide comfort after distressing calls, such as those involving CPR or other critical emergencies. Kim Cotney, the communications supervisor, emphasized the need for emotional support, particularly in the wake of a recent mass shooting that deeply affected the dispatch team. “We had talked about having something in here for support for dispatch,” Cotney noted, highlighting the importance of such interventions in high-stress environments.
Having Echo in the dispatch room allows employees to take a brief respite from the intense situations they confront. “If we get a bad call, or just any call, trying to do CPR, anything like that, he’s right there,” Cotney explained. Positioned between dispatchers, Echo offers a physical presence that can help ease the mental strain associated with their work. The simple act of reaching out to touch him serves as a reminder of comfort during challenging moments.
Echo is not limited to the dispatch room; he moves throughout the sheriff’s office, returning at night to a designated bed nearby, ensuring he’s close to dispatchers during their shifts. Research has shown that therapy dogs can significantly reduce stress and create a calming atmosphere, which is crucial for those dealing with anxiety or trauma. The sheriff’s office anticipates that Echo will be an enduring source of emotional support for the dispatch team.
The introduction of Echo highlights a growing recognition of the mental health needs of emergency responders. As they manage calls from individuals experiencing some of the worst moments of their lives, the presence of a therapy dog like Echo can provide solace and a momentary escape from the weight of their responsibilities. This initiative reflects a broader understanding of the importance of mental wellness in high-pressure occupations.
By incorporating such supportive measures, the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Office sets a precedent for other emergency services, demonstrating that fostering mental health can be as vital as the immediate response to crises.
