Teenager Raises $100,000 for Heart Research Through Music
A teenager from Los Gatos, California, has taken a unique approach to fundraising for congenital heart defect research. Seventeen-year-old Rishi Radhakrishna performed classic rock songs on piano to raise money for ongoing research into congenital heart defects, a cause that resonates with him personally. On August 30, 2023, Radhakrishna played an array of ten classic rock anthems, from artists such as Billy Joel and Led Zeppelin, with all proceeds directed towards Dr. Casey Gifford’s lab at Stanford University.
Radhakrishna, a senior at The Harker School in San Jose, was born with pulmonary stenosis, a condition that thickens the pulmonary valve and complicates blood flow from the heart to the lungs. This defect affects nearly 1% of newborns annually. In a heartfelt message on his fundraising page tied to the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health, Radhakrishna reflected on the advancements in medical science that saved his life.
“If I was born even 40-50 years earlier, the research and innovation that exist today wouldn’t have been available,” he explained. He emphasized that continuous innovation is vital for developing better treatments. Radhakrishna credited his experiences at Lucile Packard for shaping his interest in science and medicine, motivating him to contribute to advancements in these fields.
The surgical procedure he received at Lucile Packard significantly reduced the risks associated with his condition. Without this intervention, he could have faced serious health complications, including reduced cardiac efficiency and a higher likelihood of heart disease.
Following the piano concert, which featured brief inspirational speeches from Stanford professors between songs, Radhakrishna was close to his ambitious fundraising target of $100,000. His father, Preeti Sanketh, highlighted the larger message of the event, stating, “This is more than just a fundraiser. It’s about how music and science can unite to inspire hope and drive real impact for children’s health.”
Radhakrishna’s initiative illustrates the power of creative fundraising, demonstrating how personal experiences can lead to impactful community engagement. His fundraising page remains active, showcasing the ongoing effort to support vital research in congenital heart defects.
