Shohei Ohtani Shines as Dodgers Advance to World Series

The Los Angeles Dodgers have secured a spot in the World Series for the second consecutive year, largely due to the remarkable performance of Shohei Ohtani. In Game 4 of the National League Championship Series on October 20, 2023, at Dodger Stadium, Ohtani delivered an unforgettable outing, hitting three home runs and pitching six scoreless innings. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expressed his awe at Ohtani’s achievements during the post-game press conference. When asked if he was surprised by anything Ohtani did, Roberts referenced a particular highlight: “How far he hit this one tonight surprised me,” he noted, referring to Ohtani’s impressive 469-foot home run, which left the bat at a velocity of 116.9 mph, according to Statcast. “Probably not the distance, but the velocity of that one was impressive.”

Ohtani’s performance was historic. He became the eleventh player in Major League Baseball history to hit three home runs in a postseason game, a feat last accomplished by former Dodger Chris Taylor in 2021. Ohtani himself downplayed concerns about his earlier struggles at the plate. “I felt like the last couple days I felt pretty good at the plate,” he stated through interpreter Will Ireton. “Just because of the postseason sample size, the lack thereof, it’s just that. The lack of performance skews in a short period of time.”
