Two chefs from San Diego County and a cocktail bar have been recognized as semifinalists for the renowned James Beard Foundation Awards, highlighting the region’s culinary talent on a national stage. Announced on March 13, 2024, Tara Monsod of Animae and Eric Bost, executive chef of Lilo, are competing for the title of Best Chef: California. Meanwhile, Realm of the 52 Remedies, a unique speakeasy located on Convoy Street, has earned a semifinalist spot in the Outstanding Bar category.

Monsod, who heads the Asian-inspired fine-dining establishment Animae at 969 Pacific Highway in downtown San Diego, is no stranger to the James Beard Awards. She has advanced to the final round for the past two years, a milestone that sets her apart as the only local chef to have achieved this distinction in the competition’s history. In addition to her work at Animae, Monsod oversees Le Coq, a French-Asian concept situated in La Jolla.

Bost has garnered attention for his role at Lilo, a 22-seat fine-dining restaurant in Carlsbad that earned a Michelin star just two months after its opening in spring 2023. Since mid-2020, he has collaborated with restaurateur John Resnick to expand a restaurant group that now includes Jeune et Jolie, Campfire, and Wildland.

Recognition for Local Talent

Monsod and Bost are part of a select group of 20 chefs from California who have advanced to the semifinal round this year. Their inclusion not only highlights their individual talents but also underscores the growing recognition of San Diego’s culinary scene. The finalists will be announced later this spring, and the winners will be celebrated at the James Beard Awards ceremony in Chicago.

The James Beard Foundation is known for its commitment to celebrating culinary excellence and promoting the cultural significance of food. The award nominations reflect the diversity and innovation present in the current culinary landscape, with chefs like Monsod and Bost leading the way.

As the culinary community eagerly awaits the announcement of the finalists, the recognition of these chefs serves as a testament to their hard work and dedication to their craft. For food enthusiasts and industry professionals alike, this year’s awards promise to be an exciting showcase of top talent in the culinary world.
