Salvation Army Hosts 53rd Thanksgiving Dinner in Honolulu
The Salvation Army marked its 53rd annual Thanksgiving dinner at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center in Honolulu on November 23, 2023, welcoming approximately 2,000 attendees. Volunteers prepared an impressive amount of food for the occasion, including over 2,000 pounds of turkey and 2,500 slices of pie. This event not only provides a festive meal but highlights the ongoing struggles faced by many residents in Hawaii.
Troy Trimmer, the Divisional Commander of the Salvation Army, emphasized the significance of uniting the community for this meal. He stated that the gathering showcases the reality of those in need, bringing together individuals from various backgrounds. One attendee, Robert Rogers, who is currently unhoused, shared that the event offers essential support, particularly for individuals without nearby family.
Community Engagement and Support Across the Islands
The celebrations extended beyond Honolulu. On Maui, the Salvation Army collaborated with the University of Hawaii Maui College Culinary Arts Program to host an early Thanksgiving gathering. This event attracted around 750 community members, who enjoyed a meal prepared by culinary students and local volunteers. Chef instructor Craig Omori described the luncheon as a vital part of community support, allowing them to serve meals to many residents facing food and housing insecurity.
The Salvation Army’s initiatives also included 1,000 Blessings meal distributions and various Thanksgiving events across Hawaii Island. These efforts were marked by speeches from local officials and recognition of key contributors who play a crucial role in making these gatherings successful. Notable figures such as Louie Hokoana, Chancellor of UHMC, and Chris Pierce, Walmart Kahului Store Manager, received accolades for their consistent support in ensuring that these annual celebrations not only provide nourishment but also foster a sense of community.
The ongoing efforts of the Salvation Army illustrate the organization’s commitment to addressing hunger and bringing people together during the holiday season. As communities across Hawaii partake in these events, the importance of compassion and support shines through, reminding all of the spirit of Thanksgiving.
