Robert J. Jones Begins Presidency at University of Washington

Robert J. Jones officially took office as the 34th president of the University of Washington on August 1, 2023, marking the beginning of a new era for the institution. Jones, an accomplished academic leader, brings a wealth of experience from his previous roles at several prominent universities, including the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the University of Minnesota.
Born in Dawson, Georgia, Jones grew up as the son of sharecroppers. His early life was shaped by a commitment to education and hard work instilled by his parents, who had limited formal schooling but emphasized the importance of learning. As a student, Jones earned the nickname “Professor” in high school, thanks to an inspiring teacher, Walter Stallworth, who recognized his potential and encouraged him to pursue higher education.
Jones continued his academic journey at Fort Valley State University, a historically Black institution. There, under the mentorship of Malcolm C. Blunt, he secured valuable internships that deepened his passion for science, particularly in agricultural research. He later earned a master’s degree in crop physiology from the University of Georgia and completed his doctoral studies at the University of Missouri.
His research on tall fescue grass garnered attention, showcasing his abilities as both a researcher and a leader. Following his time at Missouri, he joined the University of Minnesota, where he built a successful research program on corn resilience to climate stress. While making significant academic contributions, Jones also found a community in the local church, performing for over 30 years with the ensemble Sounds of Blackness, which earned two Grammy Awards.
In 1984, Jones diverted from his research path to assist Desmond Tutu with a South African education initiative aimed at preparing Black South Africans for leadership roles in a post-apartheid society. This experience profoundly impacted him, reinforcing his commitment to equity in education.
As he transitioned into administrative roles at Minnesota, he was recognized for his leadership capabilities. Robert Bruininks, the former president of Minnesota, praised Jones for his values and ability to build trust within the university community. Jones led initiatives that connected higher education with urban communities, including the development of the Urban Research and Outreach-Engagement Center, which focused on addressing local issues through collaboration with residents.
In 2013, Jones became president of the University at Albany, where he oversaw growth in enrollment and the establishment of new academic programs. His success at Albany led to his appointment as the chancellor of the University of Illinois in 2016, where he launched a transformative $2.7 billion fundraising campaign and made significant strides in accessibility for in-state students.
Jones’s tenure at Illinois was marked by his leadership in the Big Ten Conference, where he played a pivotal role in expanding the conference and enhancing its media revenue. His reputation as a dynamic leader attracted the attention of the University of Washington when he decided to seek new challenges after nearly a decade in Illinois.
Upon his arrival at the University of Washington, Jones expressed enthusiasm for the institution’s strengths in medicine, public health, and innovation. He recognized the board’s understanding of governance and administration, which aligned with his vision for collaborative leadership.
Now, as he steps into his role, Jones aims to foster an inclusive environment where students can thrive. He encourages them to embrace their authenticity, seek mentorship, and believe in their potential. With a diverse background and a commitment to public service, Robert J. Jones is poised to lead the University of Washington into a promising future, guided by the values that shaped his journey.
