Pink the Rink Game Raises Funds and Spirits for Local Cancer Patients
The annual Pink the Rink charity hockey game took place on the evening of March 5, 2026, in Grand Junction, Colorado, drawing a sold-out crowd and continuing a nine-year tradition of community support and cancer fundraising. This year’s event, which aims to surpass last year’s record of $36,000 raised, showcased increased local sponsorships and planned activities to engage attendees and promote donations.
Tim Winegard, head coach of CMU Hockey, expressed optimism about the event’s growth. “Every year the event just keeps getting bigger with more sponsorships, local sponsorships, more donations, and more events that we plan,” he stated. Winegard emphasized that every penny raised goes directly to local cancer patients, with a long-term goal of accumulating a total of $250,000 over the nine-year span of the event.
The significance of the game extends beyond the ice rink. Winegard reflected on the broader impact of the event, stating, “It’s just nice to be part of something that’s bigger than yourself.” This sentiment was echoed by team captain Ethan Gotchey, who highlighted the importance of giving back to the community. “It really is something special,” he noted. “We’re trying to just raise money for the community because the community gives so much back to us.”
Despite the charitable focus, the competitive spirit among players remained strong. Gotchey emphasized the team’s dedication to perform at their best. “We’re all competitive and we want to win,” he explained. “So just trying to prepare like we would for any other game.” The players put in significant effort to ensure that their performance matched the spirit of the event.
For those unable to attend the game, there are still opportunities to contribute. Winegard encouraged supporters to donate online via the CMU Foundation. “Even if you don’t come to the game, you can donate now,” he said.
As the Pink the Rink event continues to grow in popularity and impact, it serves not only as a thrilling hockey match but also as a powerful reminder of the strength and unity within the community. The dedicated efforts of the players, organizers, and supporters highlight the importance of collective action in the fight against cancer.
