Over 6,500 Join Grand Rapids Turkey Trot, Raising $300,000
More than 6,500 individuals participated in the 33rd annual Grand Rapids Public Schools Turkey Trot on November 27, 2023. This popular event, held in downtown Grand Rapids, MI, brought together runners, walkers, and rollers to kick off their Thanksgiving celebrations. Despite adverse winter weather conditions, the race set a new participation record, with 6,529 entrants raising nearly $300,000 for athletic programs within the school district while also gathering food donations for local food banks.
Participants ran for a variety of causes, reflecting both personal motivations and broader philanthropic efforts. Notably, MyTeam Triumph, an organization that partners with individuals with disabilities, led the race, ensuring that everyone could experience the thrill of this endurance event. Among the participants was Bruce Babcock, a 78-year-old runner who has taken part in approximately 20 Turkey Trots. He emphasized the importance of tradition in his continued participation.
The race began promptly at 8:30 a.m., with participants departing from Van Andel Arena and completing a scenic 3.1-mile course that returned to the starting point. One of the last participants, Amy Perez, finished with a time of about one hour and ten minutes. Reflecting on her experience, she humorously stated, “Someone has to win, someone has to be last – it’s usually me.”
The event not only promoted physical fitness but also fostered a sense of community and support. Race director Stephanie Andrews Caropepe highlighted the ongoing fundraising efforts for school sports, stating, “We’re always raising money all year round to make sure kids have everything they need for school.” The district plans to continue accepting donations, ensuring that all students have equal access to athletic opportunities.
The Turkey Trot has become a cherished tradition in Grand Rapids, uniting the community through a shared love for running and helping those in need. Photojournalist Chloe Trofatter from MLive/Grand Rapids Press documented the event, capturing the spirit and energy of the day.
With its combination of athleticism and charity, the Turkey Trot has solidified its place as a staple of Thanksgiving celebrations in Grand Rapids, bringing together thousands to give back while enjoying the festive spirit of the season.
