Norfolk City Attorney Bernard Pishko has announced his retirement after serving in the city’s legal department for four decades. Pishko’s last day in office will be on February 24, 2024. His decision came in a letter addressed to Mayor Kenny Alexander and members of the City Council, in which he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the community.

In his letter, Pishko stated, “I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the opportunity to have worked with you to better our community. You make sacrifices for the good of the community, and I am privileged to have worked alongside you.” His tenure has been marked by significant contributions to the legal framework supporting various city operations.

A Distinguished Legal Career in Norfolk

Pishko was appointed as the City Attorney in November 1997 following the death of his predecessor, Philip Trapani. Throughout his career, he managed legal matters for the City Council and city staff, as well as for various other public entities, including the Norfolk School Board, the Chrysler Museum, and Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital. His office played a crucial role in navigating legal challenges and providing counsel on a wide array of issues affecting the residents of Norfolk.

During his time in office, Pishko has overseen numerous initiatives aimed at enhancing the community’s legal framework. His leadership has been instrumental in ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal laws, which has helped shape Norfolk’s development and governance.

As the city prepares for his departure, the City Council will begin the process of selecting a successor who can continue the work that Pishko has undertaken over the years. His retirement marks the end of an era for Norfolk’s legal department and leaves behind a legacy of dedicated public service.
