New Japanese Sandwich Eatery Hando Sando Set to Open in Berkeley

A new dining establishment named Hando Sando is on track to open in Berkeley, as indicated by a recently submitted permit application. The restaurant will be located at 2049 San Pablo Avenue, joining a vibrant neighborhood that includes family-run Babette, the Italian eatery Luca Cucina Italiana, and Rainbow Donuts.

The owner of Hando Sando, Binn Kitcachongpong, has yet to provide further details regarding the restaurant’s concept. However, the permit filing reveals that the venue will operate as a full-service Japanese-style restaurant, offering a selection of beer and wine. Given the name, it is anticipated that Hando Sando will feature a variety of handheld sandwiches, known in Japan for being made with crustless Japanese milk bread, or shokupan.

Classic offerings may include the egg salad sandwich, the popular katsu sando, which consists of a breaded and fried pork cutlet, and fruit-filled sandwiches accompanied by whipped cream. This approach to Japanese cuisine is expected to appeal to local residents and visitors alike.

The opening of Hando Sando will follow the debut of the Evergreen Cafe in June, which serves light fare such as breakfast plates, sandwiches, and wine. Additionally, the smashburger restaurant The Station opened in the city at 2984 Russell Street in July, quickly gaining popularity for its shakes, salads, and double burgers.

As of now, an official opening date for Hando Sando has not been announced.
